Welcome to Andrew Peacock Writes!

Before I started writing, I worked as a veterinarian. One of the parts of the job I enjoyed the most was explaining to my clients how to look after their cows, horses and pigs. In order to do this well, I needed to understand the animals and how to communicate with their owners.
Writing is all about communicating. When I write books, I’m trying to tell stories and to show how I think the world works. I believe that all of art and much of human interaction has this same goal. This website is another attempt to communicate.
Of course, a major purpose of the site is to highlight my books. I wrote the books to communicate and like every writer I dream that many people will read and enjoy my work.
But I also hope that more can be done with this website. I will be writing blogs about what I think is important in the world. There will be pieces about the books and about the process of writing. The books themselves are about more than just the stories inside.
This place is an opportunity to explore what my books are about and why they were written. If everything works the way I would like it to, this will become a place to share ideas. I hope that others will be able to contribute their opinions on what my books mean and what they think about my writing in the blogs.
My latest work VIRAL is on the surface a fairly simple adventure story, but there is much more going on below. The book owes much of its structure to The Odyssey and Joyce’s Ulysses. It isn’t important to know this to enjoy the book, but it could be fun to explore and discuss. As well, VIRAL has definite opinions about how the world works. There is commentary on politics (particularly on insincere populism), the role and meaning of faith in times of trouble, the fine line between selfishness and necessary self-care and the importance of home.
One Brave Boy and His Cat may seem a simple children’s story, but I feel strongly that it carries an extremely important lesson for many families today. Pets have become an important part of modern families and children often need help understanding the mortality of their dogs and cats.
Creatures of the Rock is a memoir. The stories are touching and funny, but through it all there is an underlying message of treating animals and people with respect and care. While many of the stories may make us laugh at the antics of the animals’ owners, the biggest laugh is always at the author.
These are the kinds of issues that I’d like to get into with the website. I’d be delighted if you would like to come along for the ride and even more thrilled if you would contribute. There’s lots more writing to come, including more books.
Thanks for reading.
